Essjay is/was many things - a faker who should have been
sussed out early on, a guy in over his head, proof that Jimmy Wales is
the dictionary example of a "substandard manager." He was also the
highest point of the (possible first) Wikipedia wave, where that first
cadre of editors looked at what they knew, checked it against the facts,
and began abandoning "The Project" in droves.
